Upstream Tech was founded by Marshall and Alden - two software engineers with experience in several successful technology startups. Motivated to align their personal passion with their backgrounds, they started Upstream Tech to harness technological innovations for an underserved space: conservation and water. The Upstream Tech team grew to include computer programmers, machine learning engineers, and environmental experts with the goal of translating the technological capabilities into solutions for conservation organizations, governments, utilities, and companies. In 2018, Upstream Tech was acquired by Natel Energy, a water and energy company that develops distributed, modular, and sustainable hydropower turbines. This support has enabled our team to continue to grow and expand product offerings for a range of conservation and clean energy applications.
As a public benefit corporation, we prioritize opportunities aligned with our conservation mission. We partner with nonprofit and for-profit organizations working towards ecological restoration, supply chain sustainability, and energy efficiency improvements goals, among others. We offer a software as a service model in which users pay for access to our web-based applications through a monthly or annual subscription.
At Upstream Tech, our goal is to translate data into better, faster resource use decisions. With satellite data from multiple sources, sophisticated data processing, and easy-to-use applications, Upstream Tech is your key partner to access the transformative potential of big data to supercharge your conservation impact.
It is not just our innovative technology, but also the Upstream Tech team that sets us apart. We combine cutting edge technologists and machine learning engineers with environmental experts who understand the conservation challenges you're facing. With a comprehensive data analysis solution, we enable organizations to drive environmental conservation efficiently and at scale.
Our first step is to understand the conservation challenges our partners face to determine how our services could help. Our team has expertise in natural resource management, wetlands, forestry, and conservation finance, among others. These experts work to connect the dots from project scoping to deliverables, ensuring that outputs will be useful to guide management plans, interventions, and adaptive actions on-the-ground.
Our software engineers create pipelines to collect, process and generate immense amounts of data from around the globe, including imagery from dozens of satellites and real-time stream gauge measurements. These pipelines work around the clock to always have the latest data, and automatically recalculate decision-making outputs so that they are always up-to-date.
Statisticians and machine learning experts are our data alchemists. By combining datasets to find patterns, they are able to separate the signal from the noise and call out nuanced trends in a scientific manner. Working with the context experts (from Step 1!) they connect the upstream conditions to downstream impacts that matter most to the project at hand.
The context from Step 1, the data from Step 2, and the analysis from Step 3 are combined by our designers and software engineers into user-friendly, collaborative applications that make visualizing and exploring up-to-date analysis easy for users of all backgrounds. And we are always here to support your team throughout the project lifecycle and ensure that you have the best information to maximize your conservation impact.
