As 2025 kicks off, we’re still reflecting on all the wins, learnings, and milestones from 2024! It’s been a year of growth and innovation for the HydroForecast team full of product advancements, model updates, thought leadership, and impactful partnerships with customers around the world.
HydroForecast by the numbers
Hydropower milestone: HydroForecast informs operations at over 10 GW of hydropower, which annually produces enough energy to power over 10 million homes!
Water utility reach: HydroForecast supports utilities that serve 5.3 million people by helping them manage their water resources.
Global presence: We are now live in 10 countries across 4 continents and are growing.
Expansion is continuing in 2025: Our forecasts are already planned to go live in 4 new countries this year and we plan to continue growing the list.
Special project in California with The Nature Conservancy: The team delivered 2 billion reach-scale predictions across 155,000 river segments, most of which were ungauged sites. This dataset will help inform habitat and ecological flows across the state.

New features and model updates
Our engineers and modelers have been hard at work advancing HydroForecast with new data inputs, updated AI architecture, and the latest scientific approaches. While much of this effort happens behind the scenes, we’re constantly innovating to bring you better, more actionable water forecasts. We’re excited to recap a few highlights from the past year.
Short-term 3 (ST-3): We launched a major update for our 10-day horizon forecast, substantially improving accuracy, reliability and interpretability.
Increased frequency of weather inputs: Our ST-3 model now includes High-Resolution Rapid Refresh forecasts (HRRR) updates every hour (for North American customers) which provides our customers the most up-to-date information available_._
Seasonal flow forecast enhancements: We added a new visualization that shows the total volume of inflow expected over the upcoming season and understand the probability that flows will be above, below or near normal.
More to come in 2025
We’ve got some exciting improvements in the works, stay tuned throughout the year! If you have ideas or feedback you want to share, you can always reach out directly to [email protected].
Seasonal-3 improvements: A next-level seasonal model is on the horizon! We are deep in R&D now developing a model that can deliver more reliable, explainable forecasts–raising performance standards in even the most challenging basins.
Step-by-step FEWS integration support: Through new tools and scripts, we’re helping HydroForecast customers integrate and operationalize our AI-powered hydrology models within existing Delft-FEWS systems.
Enhanced notifications: We are investing in notification functionalities to help your team track fast-changing conditions and respond swiftly.
Expanded weather data inputs: By incorporating more frequent and diverse weather data, we’re making our base model even more versatile, accurate, and reliable across a range of scenarios.
Faster setup for new locations: We’re helping scale forecasts by simplifying the process of adding new forecast or weather points.
