HydroForecast Newsletter: June 2026

As the year progresses, we’re keeping an eye on seasonal trends across the globe to support water management decisions. Snow season is winding down in the West after one of the driest in recent memory, and our forecasts are helping operators prepare for upcoming drought conditions. At the same time, the Southern Hemisphere is showing early signs of a highly variable snow season. These patterns will shape water-supply decisions for months to come.

Follow along for seasonal insights and updates. We have a new dedicated HydroForecast page on LinkedIn where you can find product updates, industry insights, and stories from the field.

Data for Lunch: Filling in the Gaps with Ungauged Streamflow Forecasting

Alex Truby, Solutions Strategy Lead in North America for HydroForecast, is joining the California Water Data Consortium on the Data for Lunch webinar series this month. Alex will walk through how ungauged forecasting works and where it is being applied in California water management. From Forecast-Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO) to water accounting and allocation to telemetry QA/QC, machine learning models like HydroForecast are changing what's possible.

If your work depends on understanding streamflow conditions across complex watersheds, especially at unmonitored sites, this session is for you.

Prepare for drought before it arrives

Traditional models face challenges predicting when drought will start and end as conditions drift outside the historical average more often. HydroForecast addresses this by using a foundational model trained across hundreds of basins worldwide, incorporating real-time satellite data and multiple weather ensembles. This gives operators a reliable signal even when conditions go beyond what history can tell you. Read more →

In 2025, snowmelt ended early throughout snow-fed regions in North America. HydroForecast predicted this early melt more than 4 months in advance for a customer in a snow-fed basin in California.

Insights for forecasting in snow-driven basins

From California to New Zealand, water managers are navigating their own version of uncertainty from low snow seasons: volatile snowpack, tighter margins, and tough decisions. No matter what stage you’re at in the snow cycle, HydroForecast can help. Check out these resources for managing water in snow-driven basins and how improved forecasting changes what you can confidently plan for. Explore snow resources→

Making waves at conferences across the globe

May was a busy travel month! Chief Technology Officer, Alden Keefe Sampson, attended the 2026 European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly and gave a talk on "The Hydrologic Modeler’s Evolving Role in the Age of AI".

Multiple team members traveled to the Spring Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) event in Sacramento, followed by the Western/Eastern snow conference in Denver that included a presentation. The discussions generated important ideas on how we can continue to push data and science to help ensure a reliable water supply, even in tough drought years.

Coming up in June:

  • The HydroForecast team will be presenting virtually at Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) for the Delft-FEWS User Day workshop. Tune in virtually or join in person to catch our talk on “Reproducible AI Deployment in Operational FEWS: OPG's Lessons Integrating HydroForecast to Complement Traditional Models”.
  • We’re sponsoring the NHA California Regional Meeting in San Diego where we look forward to continuing conversations on Western water needs, from FIRO to drought conditions to fire-affected basins.
  • As new members of the International Hydropower Association (IHA), we’re excited to join the organization in person for the 2026 World Hydropower Outlook Launch event in London.
